The Play & Save Team originally reached out to Teresa and Maria of Letterbox Brownies back in the spring of 2021 whilst looking for local business to support or Play & Save project. Their family run business was a perfect fit and they were warmly welcomed as one of our very first supporting business. Their wonderfully friendly and kind-hearted approach completely won us over and we are blessed to have them on board.

Letterbox Brownies & Faleycakes – Meet the owners!

Our names are Maria and Teresa, a Mother/Daughter team who love eating brownies and cakes as much as we love making them!

We run two businesses – FaleyCakes and Letterbox Brownies.

Teresa (the daughter) has been making cakes for the last ten years, initially as a part-time venture alongside other jobs including lifeguard, receptionist, hospitality assistant interspersed with university and a year in Australia travelling and working.

In 2018 Teresa started Letterbox Brownies as a way of getting her bakes further afield as it’s so much easier to send brownies through the post than a fully decorated celebration cake!
After sending out some trial boxes and getting feedback on flavours, packaging etc the website launched and Letterbox Brownies’ first sale quickly followed!   The following year Teresa took part in a competition run by our local council for small local businesses called ‘Harrow Business Den’ where she had to pitch the business in front of a panel of judges and an audience full of people!  She won!  The prize included cash and a year of business support, coaching and mentoring which was really helpful.  One of the judges said that he liked that the business did ‘exactly what it says on the tin’.  Letterbox Brownies are yummy chocolate treats that can be delivered straight through people’s letterboxes, so no missed deliveries and a nice change from the usual boring bills!

The Letterbox Brownies business grew steadily, and in late 2019 the cakes and brownies businesses were doing so well that Teresa was able to become a full time baker.

In 2020 when Covid-19 and lockdown hit us all, although the cake orders declined as there were no parties and weddings Letterbox Brownies experienced a real boom – thankfully!  Businesses were sending them to their staff working at home, people were sending brownies to loved ones wishing them well, to frontline workers thanking them for all their hard work – just so much love being sent!   And this is when Maria (the mother) came on board full time as it became far too much work for one person, and we’ve been an unstoppable brownie making team ever since! (Not forgetting some greatly appreciated volunteers who’ve helped us out at our busiest times in return for free brownie – shout out to Heather, Sean (Dad), Matt and April!

The range of flavours has grown over time, of not only brownies but blondies too, which are made with white chocolate instead of dark chocolate.  We also introduced snack sizes last year – a great way of trying all the different flavours – which went down really well.

We both love making cakes and brownies but working with chocolate can be challenging at times!  One example that springs to mind was last summer when Teresa was making a 4 tier chocolate ganache wedding cake in the midst of a heatwave – safe to say chocolate and 35 degree temperatures don’t go well! It all worked out OK in the end with help from about 6 fans/air coolers positioned round the room!

On the brownies side of the business we often have special sales, offers, competitions and the best way to find out about them is to be on our mailing list.  Just email us at info@letterboxbrownies.com with your details – name and email address – and you’ll be the first to hear about new offers.   The next best way is to follow us on Instagram and Facebook.
